Our History

St. Joseph Montessori School was established in 1968 as a preschool preparation program for St. Joseph Academy which was operated by the Sisters of Notre Dame. The Academy consisted of grades one through twelve. Recognizing the value of the Montessori approach to education, parents requested and were granted the extension of the program into the elementary school. Declining enrollment forced the closing of the 100 year old high school in 1977. A cooperative effort between the Sisters and the parent body resulted in the transition of SJMS into a private Diocesan school with a nonprofit status and an elected parent Board of Trustees. After nearly twenty years, St. Joseph Montessori School moved from its original location to its current campus.

Our Curriculum

As goals provide direction for learning processes, the curriculum and method provide the way. SJMS provides a regular Montessori curriculum enriched by special offerings. Because children learn best during their individual "sensitive periods," the curriculum is individualized, allowing each student to develop at his or her own rate. The Montessori classrooms at all levels are characterized by work or activity areas designed to address the various areas of curriculum. The curriculum is organized to help children grow in all aspects of their lives.

The Montessori Method

Maria Montessori, born in 1870, was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree. She worked in the fields of psychiatry, education and anthropology. She believed that each child is born with a unique potential to be revealed, rather than as a "blank slate" waiting to be written upon. Her main contributions to the work of those of us raising and educating children are in these areas:

- Preparing the most natural and life supporting environment for the child
- Observing the child living freely in this environment
- Continually adapting the environment in order that the child may fulfill
his greatest potential: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
