Email & Text Notifications for School Closings and Early Dismissals

Get text message and/or email reminders of days when SJMS is closed as well as notifications of snow days right when the decision is made to close! To participate, simply follow this link. If you change your mind later, you can easily unsubscribe. Also, messages will only be sent regarding school closings or other emergent information; parents will not receive text messages from this service for any other reason.

Becoming a Montessori Parent

The SJMS community is a learning community and there is always more to learn about Montessori education. The best way to learn is to experience Montessori through the eyes of your child. However, it is important to understand a bit about what and how your child will be learning. To get started:

  • Schedule a time to observe your child's classroom. Contact Candice Singleton, Director of Admission to schedule.

  • Familiarize yourself with the basics of the Montessori Method by reading books by or about Maria Montessori, perusing the websites of Montessori accrediting bodies like the American Montessori Society, and attending parent education events here at SJMS.

  • Reinforce and build on your child's classroom experience by using the Montessori principles of order, independence, and self-motivation at home.

Check out the Parent Education events we offer throughout the year here at SJMS

  • New Parent Orientation - A night all about getting to know SJMS! Meet some of the teachers and Board members, learn about some of our policies and procedures, ways to stay in the know, and volunteer opportunities for parents.

  • Blue Jay Exchange - Meet up once a month with our Head of School, Brian, and other members of our community for conversation and community.

  • Journey & Discovery - Take a journey of discovering what it’s like inside a Montessori classroom. This class will allow you to explore the continuum of the school and experience Montessori the way your children do.

  • Positive Discipline - This class will examine positive discipline techniques. It is geared towards parents of younger students but anyone is welcome to attend.

  • Moving Up Night - Come see a snapshot of what the different levels look like at SJMS and what your child can look forward to at the next stage in their development. Teachers will show how Montessori materials are used to develop more complex and abstract concepts as your child grows and moves to the next level.
